Topic outline

  • This short online course has been created by UCSF School of Medicine's Technology Enhanced Education (TEE) Innovations group to help you create Screen Lessons. "Screen Lessons" also known as screencasts are created on your computer and intended for online viewing by students. In this course you will be introduced to the basic pedagogical and technical principles of creating screencasts using the software ScreenFlow or Microsoft Office Mix. We will periodically be updating the course content to keep it relevant.

If you have further questions please email iRocket. Also, visit the TEE website to learn more about our team

  • Essential Reading

  • Technical Instructions

TEE supports both ScreenFlow and Microsoft Office Mix for creating Screen Lessons. ScreenFlow runs on Mac while Microsoft Office Mix runs on PC.

The TEE Innovations team has a ScreenFlow Kit and a Microsoft Office Mix Kit available for checkout to UCSF SOM faculty instructors. You can also purchase the software yourself if your computer meets the system requirements.

Once you've decided which software platform you are going to use to create your screencast you can follow our directions to get started (these directions assume you are working with one of our kits, but should still be useful to you if you are using your own device):

  • Video Examples

Inking, demonstrations, and test-your-knowledge questions make Screen Lessons more engaging.

    • This chart compares several of the many screencasting software options available. Although not comprehensive, it will give you an overview of the big competitors and help steer you towards choosing a software solution for your next screen lesson project.
